Cable theft still a huge concern in the Moot

Around 21:20 two suspects were taken into custody by Hercules police station and have been charged of cable theft.

A private security company helped police nab two men suspected of stealing more than half a ton of cables in Pretoria on Tuesday evening.

Around 21:20, the two were caught by Citi protection crime response (CPCR) and handed over to the Hercules police station. The two have been charged with cable theft.

Reinhard Raschke of CPCR, said reaction officers, Elvis Thsifhenya and Peter Macado were patrolling the area and came across two men on Daspoort train station in Sinovich Drive and Herman Street.

“They and two others saw the reaction vehicle and dropped the cables before fleeing towards the Daspoort station.

“Two of the men climbed into a tree but unfortunately the others managed to get away,” said Raschke.

Since Monday, CPCR attended to four similar scenes each taking place in the evening.

Earlier this week, cables were cut in 12th Avenue in Wonderboom South.

“CPCR were called to the scene within minutes, but no arrests were made,” he said.

Raschke added that cable theft has become a problem in the Waverley area.

“Peter Makado and Gert Brink responded to three cases of street light cable theft. It has been on the increase.

“We want to urge the community to be vigilant when they come across suspicious looking suspects.

“The problem can only be solved when we join hands with residents as well as the police,” he concluded.
