Car guards help with the arrest of ‘thieves’ in east

“They immediately informed police officers and community patrollers that were busy with operations in the vicinity.”

Car guards in Menlo Park assisted with the arrest of two men who allegedly broke into a vehicle on Ox Road on Friday.

“Two informal car guards that are working at ‘The Strip’ in Lynnwood Road saw how two unknown men broke into a vehicle,” said police spokesperson Captain Colette Weilbach.

“They immediately informed police officers and community patrollers who were busy with operations in the vicinity.”

Weilbach said when police responded they found the two suspects inside another vehicle, trying to drive away.

The police stopped them and searched the vehicle.

“Car breaking implements and a brown box were found inside their vehicle,” Weilbach said.

“The car guards informed the police officers that they saw how the suspects broke into a Ford Ranger and stole the box from it. The owner of the Ford Ranger later confirmed that the box belongs to him and that it was stolen from his vehicle.”

The two suspected robbers aged 40 and 43 from Eersterust were arrested and will appear in the Hatfield Community court on charges of theft out of motor vehicle, possession of stolen property and possession of car breaking implements.

Station commander, Brigadier Kushie Pietersen congratulated the car guards for their sterling work and for being the eyes and the ears of the police.

Pietersen also thanked the Brooklyn Community Police Forum (CPF), community patrollers and the Security Forum who assisted once again with weekend operations.

“An additional 15 arrests were made during these operations for crimes such as driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless and/or negligent driving and drinking in public.”

Members of the community are urged to play their role by reporting any suspicious persons, vehicles or circumstances to the police immediately by phoning the 10111 emergency number.

Information with regards to crime can be given to the police anonymously by phoning 08600-10111 or by using the MySAPS app.
