North police warn motorists about spikes that are put on Soutpan Road.

Motorists are cautioned to be extra vigilant and take necessary precautions while driving on that road.

North police have warned residents to be careful of metal spikes used by robbers in the north of Pretoria to force motorists to bring their vehicles to a halt.

This after they removed two “strongly welded” spikes on Soutpan Road this weekend.

Police spokesperson Captain Stephen Maluleka said the spikes would damage vehicles’ tyres and when motorists get out of their cars to check, they would be robbed of their valuables.

“Sometimes motorists would be assaulted in the process too,” he said.

Maluleka said motorists were cautioned to be extra vigilant.

Rietgat station commander Colonel Stephina Nkosi urged the community to help in identifying the criminals behind these robberies.

Nkosi said that more police vehicles were deployed for patrols in the area to deal with the issue.

“Motorists must not stop – even if their tyres are punctured. They should immediately call for help and drive to the nearest petrol station or safe place where they can be helped. Please keep driving, even if it costs you a tyre or rim.”

Police also urged welders not to help criminals make such spikes.

Spikes found.
