On Saturday, 31 October, Laerskool Saamspan in Mountain View announced on Facebook that their beloved grade 5 teacher Joalene White had passed away on Friday evening.

“Our heavenly Father last night decided to pick one of the most beautiful and most valued teachers from His garden, our beloved teacher Joalene White,” the school said on its page.

“Our prayers are with her husband Wikus, their little girl Kaitlyn, her parents, other family members and friends.

“Teacher Joalene, may you rest in peace and take big strides in Heaven as you did here and may your beautiful voice fill the halls of Heaven.”

White was in an accident with her husband Wikus and four-year-old daughter Kaitlyn, who survived the accident.

Confirming that White had passed away in a car accident on Friday evening, Herlewing Sentrum Wonderboompoort also expressed their dismay at losing a talented member of their congregation.

“Joalene was a ray of sunshine, she always arrived with a smile on her face. Not only did she have an exceptional voice, she was someone to look up to, she was always prepared to help and assist anyone,” Pastor Tertius van den Berg told Rekord.

A vigil was held at the school on Sunday, 1 November, with many learners, parents and teachers placing flowers, cards and candles at the gate of the school in remembrance of teacher Joalene.

The school also posted on its Facebook page about the symbolic significance of the rain that came pouring down after Pastor Andries Nel had said a prayer.

“When the heavens opened and it started raining, everybody moved inside the school hall and lit their candles in remembrance of teacher Joalene,” it said.

“The school would like to thank all the mums who arranged the vigil and would like to thank everybody who participated and came to pay their respects.

Van den Berg said, “She was one of our lead singers in the church. We are grateful that her husband and daughter are safe. We as a congregation will be joining hands to embrace her loved ones with immeasurable support during this difficult time.”

No arrangements for her funeral have been announced yet.
