Avoid falling victim to crime this festive season – police

Over the past few months, the Atteridgeville station has seen a large number of hijackings being reported.

Atteridgeville police say they have noticed a sudden spike in crime tendencies and have warned the community to be vigilant and take safety measures.

Station commanders Brigadier Mbangwa Nkhwashu encouraged the community to take precautions to ensure a peaceful and enjoyable festive season.

“INthe past few months, the station has seen a large number of hijackings being reported. The patterns spread throughout the Atteridgeville policing precinct and thus the continuous outcry to the community to stop the tendencies of couples parking outside the yard and sitting in cars especially after dark,” he said.

Nkhwashu said that informal settlements have been a fertile ground for murder and robbery.

The neighbourhood watches are encouraged to keep a lookout for illegal firearms and to inform the police station on 012-385-1101 or to contact Crime Stop on 08600-10111.

“It is important that when shopping, people secure their valuables by not leaving them on the car seat. It is also wise that when you park your car, ensure that it is properly locked as criminals tend to steal goods out of the vehicle while you enjoy your time shopping,” Nkhwashu said

He also suggested that stokvel members should use electronic methods to make payments to their members as opposed to cash withdrawals as this method constantly led to some form of robbery.

“The safety of the community is our mandate and is taken very seriously by the men and women in blue who continue the fight against crime. The community, however, is also tasked to make sure that criminals don’t feel comfortable in doing crime in Atteridgeville.

“This can be achieved by establishing neighbourhood watches and patrols, and informing the police of any criminal activities,” Nkhwashu said.

“Anonymous tip-offs are a strong and useful tool that help the police to curb crime, make sure you do your part,” he said.
