East man gets 10-year sentence over RDP house fraud

"After the woman deposited the money into his account, she went to the house where the rightful owner told her that it was not for sale."

A 38-year-old man was sentenced to 10 years in prison for fraud after he sold an RDP house in Nellmapius that didn’t belong to him to someone for R250 000.

“Michael Lesiba Makhafola showed the complainant a house that belonged to someone else,” said police spokesperson Warrant Officer Isaac Mcunu.

“After the woman deposited the money into his account, she went to the house where the rightful owner told her that it was not for sale.”

Mcunu said Makhafola was nowhere to be found until investigating officer detective Constable Ntshengedzheni Matumba and police task informers traced him and arrested him in June.

He was sentenced by the Pretoria magistrate’s court.

Silverton station commander applauded detective Matumba for his outstanding work during the investigation on the case.

“We encourage officers to keep up the good work and continue to prioritise the safety of our community at large.”
