Measures implemented at Gauteng licensing centres to deal with backlog
All DLTCs falling under the Tshwane metro will open from 06:00 starting in December.
Several measures will be implemented next week Monday November at local licensing centres to address the current backlog on the online booking system.
This as the transport minister, joined by the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) CEO, made an unannounced visit to Themba Driving Licencing Testing Centre (DLTC) in Hammanskraal on Thursday.
Their visit follows outrage from drivers and vehicle owners who have become frustrated with the system.
Minister Fikile Mbalula said he acknowledged the challenge of corruption at DLTCs nationwide and committed himself to ensure that perpetrators were brought to book.
He announced the following interventions to ease the backlog:
– 70% of capacity, human resources and equipment at DLTCs will be dedicated to servicing expired driving licence card renewals and professional driving permits (PDPs).
– 70% of slots on the online booking system will be dedicated to expired driving licence cards and PDPs.
– Two satellite centres will be opened at the RTMC offices in Centurion and Midrand.
– A task team has been established to advise the Gauteng Department of Transport on the procurement of mobile centres.
– An operations centre will be opened to daily monitor operations at DLTCs and evaluate the availability of booking slots which will operate from Monday, 16 November 2020.
– Extended operational hours will be introduced with centres opening from Monday to Sunday from next week.
– All DLTCs falling under the Tshwane metro will open from 06:00 starting in December.
He said “these interventions will remain in force until the backlog is cleared”.
