Rietgat police urge absentee homeowners to leave someone in charge while away

"It has come to our attention that criminals are targeting households that are not occupied on a full-time basis in the area."

Find someone to look after your house if you don’t live in it full-time, Rietgat police have urged residents after a spate of robberies in the area.

“It has come to our attention that criminals are targeting households that are not occupied on a full-time basis,” said police spokesperson Captain Stephen Maluleka.

“In most cases, thugs gain entry through breaking the window or the door.”

According to him, electrical appliances such as microwaves, plasma screens, sound systems and other valuables are stolen during these break-ins.

He encouraged homeowners to have at least one person permanently at their homes.

Maluleka urged anyone who may have information on stolen household goods and items to share it with the police by contacting them on their Crime Stop number on 08600-10111 or via their My SAPS App or Rietgat SAPS 012-432-7806/7.
