A Mamelodi East man received a hefty sentence for two charges of possession and dealing with drugs last week Thursday.

The Mamelodi magistrate’s court sentenced Benny Mngomezulu (46) to six years’ imprisonment for dealing in drugs.

In addition, Mngomezulu was sentenced to 10 years’ direct imprisonment, which was wholly suspended for five years on condition he was not convicted for breaking any drug trafficking laws during the suspension period.

Police spokesperson Constable Lethabo Mashiloane said they welcomed the sentence.

Mashiloane said the suspect was arrested by the Mamelodi crime prevention unit last year in June.

“The unit was busy with normal stop-and-searches when they received information about an African male suspected of selling drugs at Eighth Avenue in Khalambazo,” he said.

They rushed to the address and found a man who matched the description given to them.

“Officers searched the suspect and he was found in possession of a black plastic bag with various drugs in it,” said Mashiloane.

The suspect was in possession of 607 balls of dagga, 9 500 small sticks of dagga and 178 big sticks to the street value of R20 000.

Mashiloane said the suspect was immediately arrested and the case was assigned to Detective Constable Alfred Chidi to investigate.

Police management congratulated Chidi for working tirelessly on the case until the day of sentencing.

“Chidi took his time collecting the necessary evidence and the thorough investigation led to the conviction of the suspect.”

He added that the sentence will send a strong message to others who might think of committing similar offences or dealing with drugs.

The police further congratulated the public for the good relationship with the police in fighting crime.

Mashiloane concluded by advising the public to report any suspicious looking persons to the police by dialling 08600-10 111.
