‘Minimal disruptions’ as north water treatment plant upgraded
Upgrades and refurbishments to the Rooiwal waste water treatment plant are expected to be completed by 20 July 2022.
Ongoing upgrades to the Rooiwal water treatment plant will only be finished by 2022, with “minimal disruptions” to operations at the plant, according to mayoral spokesperson Jordan Griffiths.
The ongoing upgrades, valued at around R253-million, would “ensure ongoing improved effluent discharge from the plant to the environment”.
Refurbishment work was expected to be done by 20 July 2022.

“Work to the plant includes upgrades of the inlet works at the Rooiwal north plant as well as the biological reactors mixing and aeration system.
“Additional upgrades will include those of the anaerobic digester on the Rooiwal east and east plants,” Griffiths said.
“Other upgrades will include upgrades of the top sludge dewatering facility and the Rooiwal north plant flow balancing tank.”
Tshwane mayor Randall Williams said in his inaugural speech he would be “carefully” monitoring refurbishments at the plant.
“This is a crucial piece of infrastructure,” he said.

“It is vital that it operates at full capacity to adequately service the local community.”
Last year, civil rights organisation AfriForum launched two court bids to force the metro to effect repairs to the plant.
At the time, Pretoria district co-ordinator Jaco Grobberlaar said that the works were too small and that expansion should have been completed already.
The plant has been plagued by insufficient maintenance as well as insufficient chemical and supply chain budgets.
