Four-hour fun walk to fight against women and children abuse

“We organised the fun walk because gender-based violence is too high in Soshanguve.”

A group of community members walked four hours from Wonderpark to Soshanguve to show support for the 16 Days of Activism for no violence against women and children campaign on Saturday.

The fun walk was organised by the Tsholofelo Foundation.

Despite a small turn-out, the foundation’s founder, Tsholofelo Phetla (27), described the walk as “a success”.

The walk ended at Tshwane Park in block H, Soshanguve.

Tsholofelo Foundation is a non-profit organisation established in 2020. It is based in Soshanguve block X.

“We organised the fun walk because gender-based violence is too high in Soshanguve,” Phetla said.

Karabo Khumalo (22), who took part, said she believed that the walk would help raise awareness about women and children abuse in her community.

“People should support this movement,” she said.

“If someone is being abused, then this movement is here to be their voice.”

Not only did young adults attend the event, but grown-ups such as Moses Nkomo (38) who is also the foundation’s oldest member also took part.

“This is not just about violence towards children and women,” said Nkomo.

“There are men out there who are also being abused, but are afraid to speak out. Therefore, I decided to participate to show that there is no shame in speaking out as a man.

“Women and children are being killed here in South Africa, many of them by family members. Men should love and respect women and children. If there are problems within the family, they should all sit down and resolve the issue.”

Nkomo said this was the foundation’s first fun walk.

“We hope people will join us the next time when we have another walk.”
