The lives of three families from Pretoria were irrevocably changed after an accident on the N4 claimed the lives of three grade 5 Laerskool Menlopark learners as well as a mother of the school. Mariëtte Engelbrecht and her daughter, Ronel, Nina Strydom and Marli van der Vyver were on their way back to Pretoria after they attended a Voortrekker camp in Belfast, Mpumalanga.

It is believed their vehicle’s tyre burst and they lost control before it crashed. More details surrounding the accident was not yet available. Denina Bernard of Die Voortrekkers: Kruithoring said their hearts are broken. “Who would have though that such a wonderful weekend would end in a tragedy? The loss is incalculable,” she said. “We think with love and compassion of their families, relatives and friends during this time. “Their passing away came as a huge shock to the Dassie family,” Bernard said.
“We pray that God will comfort them with peace.” Bernard said that Mariëtte has been involved with Kruithoring for the past 10 years, and has been a member of the Dassies for the past five years. “She was a Voortrekker for 25 years,” Bernard said. “Ronel has been part of the Voortrekker family since grade R.

“Thank you for all the messages of hope that streamed in since yesterday. “We will communicate and share messages with the family,” said Bernard. Marketing and communication officer at Laerskool Menlopark, Francois van Biljon said “tears are flowing” after the loss of their learners. “How do we say goodbye to a life that barely started?
The only way we are going to process this loss, is to hold on to our Heavenly Father.

“Thank you to everyone who offered their help,” he said. “Over the past two days, we realised how many people have offered their help and assistance.
“All of our love goes out to the parents, brother, sister, families and friends of Ronel Engelbrecht, Nina Strydom and Marli van der Vyver.
“We pray for support and love and may our Heavenly Father embrace each and everyone,” said Van Biljon.
