Family, friends bid farewell to lost lives

It has been a heartbreaking and devastating week for family and friends of Mariëtte and the three young girls.

Family members and friends finally said their farewells to a mother and three grade 5 learners of Laerskool Menlopark who lost their lives in a car accident on Sunday, 6 December.

Mariëtte Engelbrecht (52) and her daughter, Ronel and two friends, Marli van der Vyver and Nina Strydom were making their way back from a Voortrekker camp in Belfast, Mpumalanga when they lost their lives on the N4 between Bronkhorstspruit and Pretoria, close to the R568-offramp.

The memorial service for Mariëtte and Ronel were held at the NG Kerk Stella Street in Waterkloof, Pretoria on Thursday.

Nina Strydom was buried from NG Kerk Lynnwood the following day.

Marli van der Vyver was put to rest from the NG Kerk in Daspoort on Saturday.

They were part of the Die Voortrkkers: Kruithoring Dassie team.

Mariëtte had been involved with Voortrekkers: Kruithoring for the past 10 years and her daughter, Ronel, has been part of the Voortrekker family since grade R.

Die Voortrekkers: Kruithoring said that it has been a tough week.

“Precious memories of Nina, Marli, Ronel and her mother, Mariëtte will forever be in our hearts.

“We want to greet you with the following words: ‘Be on course until we meet again, until we meet again keep course’.”

Marli’s sister, who are diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy, was one of the first to write a message on her sister’s coffin.

Friends of the little dark-headed girl also wrote a special message to Marli.

Nina’s father, Jaco, thanked all who are involved at Laerskool Menlopark, as well as to all the mothers and fathers of the school who offered their help and support to the family.

Ronel’s brother, Christiaan, said that it was unfortunate that his sister could not grow up too.

“You have been an example to us. We love you very much,” he said.

Father Dawie’s tribute: “To a mother and a daughter. You were everything in our lives. We will miss waking up with you.

“Thank you for everything you have done for us. You were the best wife and mum. We already miss you infinitely.”
