Joy as the class of 2020 receive their matric results

Our teachers went the extra mile. They spent sleepless nights, they did not have weekends. For them, it was about the learners and for that, we are very thankful.

It was excitement all around for learners who visited their schools to collect their matric results on Tuesday morning.

The matric class of 2020 managed an overall pass of 76.2% with Gauteng scoring 83.3%, despite months of school closures and learners having to adapt to the new way of schooling caused by Covid-19.

Mfundo Cindi of Soshanguve High School who got seven distinctions said he was very proud of his achievement because of all the challenges caused by Covid-19.

Cindi said he would be pursuing his dream of studying actuarial science at the University of Cape Town.

“I chose actuarial science because I love mathematics dearly and also the sciences, and problem-solving. My mother and my whole family are very proud of what I have achieved.”

Keabetswe Mashaya of the same school was out of words and “overexcited” having got five distinctions.

She would be pursuing a BComm accounting degree.

“I faced a lot of challenges this year, and I also contracted Covid-19 at some point. I could not come to school but that did not stop me, as I studied while I was at home. I am so grateful of what I have achieved.”

For Boitumelo Tshinangwe the third top achiever at Soshanguve High this was an “amazing achievement bearing in mind all the difficulties I faced during the year”.

“I expected less because we had been opening and closing but above all, I managed to get these four distinctions. I’m planning to go and study BComm accounting this year, because I love numbers.”

Michelle Mngoma, Siyabonga Magagula and Biance Mampane

Soshanguve High School principal Sydney Sibiya said he was very proud of the achievements by the students.

“Of our matriculants, 137 qualified to study for bachelor’s degrees and there were 97 distinctions.

“The quality of the results have made me a happy person. I know that there is a decline in the percentage of the results compared to last year, but we managed a 79.09% which I see as a great achievement.

“Looking at what happened last year, our school was burnt down and Covid-19… it was just chaos but we still managed a nearly 80% pass rate.”

At Elizabeth Matsemela Secondary School in Soshanguve Bianca Mampane came out tops.

“I lacked confidence and self-esteem but then looking at these results, I feel much confidence and I have gained high self-esteem. I am planning to study teaching at an intermediate phase this year.”

Another top achiever Michelle Mngoma said last year was “a very difficult year, and I never expected such results”.

“Covid-19 affected us very badly. I am very proud of the results that I got. My mother was over the moon when I told her I managed a bachelor’s degree [pass] because she has always hoped the best for me. She hoped I’d finish school so that I can help change the circumstances of my family.”

Principal of Elizabeth Matsemela Secondary Judith Mashala commended the hard work by both the learners and the teachers.

Mfundo Cindi, Boitumelo Tshinagwe, Keabetswe Mashaya jumping for joy,

“Our teachers went the extra mile. They spent sleepless nights and did not have free weekends. It was about the learners and for that, we are very thankful.

“Our learners did us proud. Despite all the hardships that the class of 2020 faced, they managed to pull through. It was not easy, so whatever they have achieved, I am very proud of them and I wish them all the best for their future.”
