Primary school to get extra classrooms

The school was targeted by protesting parents who wanted their children to be placed at schools closer to where they lived instead of more distant neighbourhoods.

Three extra classrooms will be built at Laerskool Akasia in the north of Pretoria, but none at Hoërskool Akasia.

This was according to Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi in response to a written question at the Gauteng provincial legislature.

Hoërskool Akasia has no space to build additional classrooms,” said Lesufi.

Both schools were targeted by protesting parents who wanted their children to be placed at schools closer to where they lived instead of more distant neighbourhoods.

Protests were also held at several schools in the area since the new academic year started, namely Hoërskool Gerrit Maritz, Laerskool Danie Malan and Pretoria Noord Hoërskool.

In the same written response, Lesufi said no learners in the area were placed in schools that were further than 30km away from where they resided.

He said learners who could not be accommodated at these schools were placed at Hoërskool Hercules, Daspoort Secondary, Hillview High School and Amandasig Secondary School.

Lesufi said the distance between Hoërskool Hercules and Hoërskool Akasia was 5,32km.

Daspoort Secondary School and Hoërskool Akasia were said to be 5,11km away from each other.

Hillview High School was 6,50km and Amandasig Secondary School 3,20km from Hoërskool Akasia.

The distance between Laerskool Kameeldrift and Laerskool Akasia was 13,67km.

A total of 574 learners could not be placed at Hoërskool Akasia and 256 could not be placed at the Laerskool Akasia because “both were filled to capacity with learners who live within the school feeder zone”.

Gauteng education department spokesperson Steve Mabona did not comment about the additional classrooms to be built at Laerskool Akasia.

“More information will be communicated in the near future,” he said.
