Eldoraigne residents construct a bike park

“It is a public park, anyone is welcome to use it free of charge. No motorcycles, however, or bicycles powered by any kind of motor, are allowed.”

Residents from Eldoraigne put their heads together to construct a bike park on the corner of Hendrik Verwoerd and Willem Botha avenues.

According to local ward councillor, Cindy Billson, the project formed part of Tshwane metro’s Adopt-a-Spot programme.

“The programme entails that applicants approach the metro to adopt a piece of Tshwane metro owned land for the purpose of maintenance and beautification at no cost to the city,” Billson said.

“A proposal was submitted to the Department of Agriculture, which was accepted. The land had been zoned as a park, though had not yet been developed as a park.”

Billson said the project started in 2019 when children from the area planted and adopted trees.

“We wanted to encourage the local children to get involved and issued certificates for adopted trees, and even today they are still looking after their trees,” Billson said.

She said the track was laid out by a local resident, Gerhard van Deventer, “whose daughter is a Springbok cyclist”.

“This year I met Morne Viljoen, owner of a nursery school at Bakenkop. One of the hills that forms part of the track, is on his property. He built us two more hills in the park.”

Billson said they got building sand from the local quarry and cement was donated by a local engineering business. Community members donated about eight bakkie loads full of plants, which the local Scouts helped to plant.

“It is a public park, anyone is welcome to use it free of charge. No motorcycles, however, or bicycles powered by any kind of motor, are allowed,” Billson said.
