Meet ward 44 new councillor

Christiaan Mauritz van den Heever, also known as Christo (62), a DA chief whip was voted in to be the new councillor for residents of Faerie Glen, parts of Garsfontein and Boardwalk.

Ward 44’s newly elected ward councillor is looking forward to ensuring excellent services are delivered to the residents of his ward.

Christiaan Mauritz van den Heever, also known as Christo (62), a DA chief whip was voted in to be the new councillor during by-elections held on Wednesday.

The DA won the by-election also contested by the Freedom Front Plus (FF+), the African National Congress (ANC) as well as the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).

The party took the lead with 65.38% of the votes, followed by the FF+ with 31.96%, ANC got 1.64% and the EFF at 1.03%.

Van den Heever who has been an acting councillor in the ward while waiting for the by-election, will now occupy the position permanently.

Areas that he will be overseeing include Faerie Glen, parts of Garsfontein and Boardwalk.

“I am looking forward to getting to know residents better and ensuring excellent service delivery in ward 44,” Van den Heever said.

“Most important is addressing electricity issues caused by Wapadrand substation which needs upgrading as well as the safety and security of residents.”

Van den Heever who has been a resident of Garsfontein for the past 13 years, said he had identified some areas of concern that needed attention in his ward.

“Issues such as potholes, street lights, water leaks, power failures, billing issues and painting of road signs need great attention.

“I will do oversight and identify, escalate and then follow up to see if these issues were dealt with,” he said.

“Regarding billing issues, I will have regular information billing tables dealing with billing issues. I will also have finance officials present to assist.”

Van den Heever who started his political career as a branch chairperson for the ward in 2011, is the DA’s chief whip in the Tshwane council.

He holds a BA degree in physical education and BA Hons (history) from the University of Pretoria.

“I grew up in Bloemfontein. My parents move to Tshwane when I was in standard seven and I have lived here since then,” he said.

“I matriculated at the Hoërskool Staatspresident C R Swart in Waverly.”

Van den Heever is a married father of five and a keen golfer “when time allows”. He also loves camping, reading and walking nature trails, braai and spending time with my family.

“Through continuous energetic hard work, I will ensure excellent service delivery to the residents of ward 44, keeping communication channels open at all times,” he said.
