Sanitary pads keep schoolgirls healthy and in school
"The learners did not just receive the sanitary pads, but we educated them about the menstrual cycle."
Sanitary pads keep schoolgirls healthy and in school during that time of the month.
These words came from the former vice captain of Banyana Banyana and founder of the Evah Mokwape Foundation, who recently donated sanitary pads and held educational talks with learners of Koos Matli primary school in Mamelodi East.
Evah Mokwape said they made the generous donations to the school together with Struggle Kindly Motivate organisation in partnership with MTN last week Saturday.
The aim of the event was to provide sanitary products to pre-teen girls and teenagers attending schools around Mamelodi and its surroundings.
“The event was also attended by parents. The learners were educated on what is happening monthly with their bodies,” said Mokwape.
Across South Africa many girls, even before the pandemic, missed out on schooling every month because of menstruation.
“As our communities grapple with the unfortunate reality brought on by the Covid pandemic, the direct impact has had a tremendous socio-economic effect,” said Mokwape.
“Another issue we were discussing with the learners was menstrual hygiene and how to manage personal hygiene during their menstruation period and how to dispose of products.”
Evah Mokwape Foundation was started in 2017 with the aim to help young stars in different sporting codes as well as assisting the community with daily social issues.
“Now it is no longer necessary for the girls to bunk classes,” she said.
Earlier this year, the organisation donated school shoes and uniforms to needy learners identified by their teachers.
Mokwape said the donations will encourage learners to look forward to going to school every day with no worries walking tall.
