“He was sentenced to five years imprisonment which is wholly suspended for five years on condition he is not convicted of the same offence during the period of suspension.”
Hercules police have welcomed the sentences handed to transgressors in their police precinct by Tshwane regional court recently.
Police spokesperson Bonginkosi Msimango said they welcomed the sentencing of 32-year-old Vuyo Kimono who was found guilty of murdering Thabo Lephalale in May 2017.
Msimango said the pair were drinking in a shebeen in Bremer informal settlement on 13 May 2017, when Kimono started accusing Lephalale of spilling beer over him.
“They started quarrelling and an argument ensued. Kimono then stabbed Lephalale’s girlfriend before attacking him, stabbing him in his upper body.
“The injured man ran a few steps before collapsing and dying.
“Kimono was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment of which two years were suspended for five years, on condition that the accused is not convicted of murder committed during the period of suspension.”
Msimango said in another incident, a former South African National Defence Force (SANDF) member Rudolf Pretorius (67) was sentenced by the Tshwane regional court for the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition belonging to the SANDF on 3 June.

He said police were investigating a house robbery when they discovered the firearms and ammunition in his house.
“When police arrived in his house, they discovered firearms belonging to the SANDF. The firearms were in his possession but the owners of those firearms was the SANDF,” Msimango said.
“He was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment which is wholly suspended for five years on condition he is not convicted of the same offence during the period of suspension.”
Msimango said in another incident, two men, Aaron Lekgetho (20) and Andries Khipa (39) were found guilty by the Pretoria regional court for stealing a gate on a plot in Kameeldrift West.
Msimango said somebody saw the men carrying the gate that belonged to a person that they knew.
“Fortunately, somebody saw the suspects walking with the gate and informed the owner. The owner followed the suspects until they were apprehended. A security guard assisted in apprehending the suspects before police arrived.
“They were sentenced to R6 000 fine or three months’ imprisonment conditionally suspended for three years.”
Msimango said that police would like to assure community members that they were getting to the bottom of their cases.
“We assure trust and confidence to our community by ensuring that offenders are brought to book.”
Hercules station commander Colonel Peta Tsoaedi welcomed the sentences and applauded the detectives “for the job well done”.
