Schools in Laudium close as Covid infections rise

"Significantly young children also seem to be super spreaders of this virus which has not been previously observed."

Two schools in Laudium have closed down due to the surge of Covid-related cases in the area.

On Wednesday, the Central Islamic School confirmed all classes were suspended until further notice.

“We have been informed that the virus is spreading at an alarming rate as we now enter this third wave. Significantly young children also seem to be super-spreaders of this virus which has not been previously observed,” the school said.

The school said the e-learning platform would be activated.

On Monday, the Tshwane Muslim School in Laudium also temporarily closed down.

“Due to the rise in Covid cases, the board and management of the school has taken a decision to suspend all contact classes from grades RR to 12 as of Monday, 7 June. The school, IT department and staff are currently focusing on their online teaching programme,” the school said on Monday.

Last month, the Educators Union of South Africa called for the closure of schools across the country.

“Vaccinate teachers and provide PPE in schools and then keep the learner on a rotational system. If the department can’t do that, then schools should close immediately and allow for remote learning and teaching to take place,” the union said.
