More new Covid-19 cases, deaths as toll climbs
With the highest daily infection nationally, parts of Tshwane were among those that recorded relatively high daily infections on Wednesday.

Gauteng has recorded more than 5 000 new coronavirus daily infections, the highest nationally, for a second-day running.
According to the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), on Thursday the province recorded 5 597 new cases accounting for 61% of overall national daily infections.
The figure was 5 111 on Wednesday.
The eight other provinces on Wednesday and Thursday recorded daily infections under 1 000 new cases.
The second-day moving average has seen Gauteng breaking its trend of recording more than 2 000 daily infections since last week.
The provincial government said on Wednesday that Tshwane sub-districts were among those that recorded highest number of infections. Overall the region accounted for 1 612 new infections which was the second highest in the province.
Tshwane district 3 which includes areas such as Atteridgeville, Laudium, Pretoria CBD, Hercules, Danville, Saulsville and Lotus Gardens had 538 cases; followed by region 4, Eldoraigne, Waterkloof, Olievenhoutbosch, Rooihuiskraal, Lyttelton, Silverton, Centurion, Brooklyn and Hatfield which accounted for 359 new cases.
The total number of confirmed cases in the region on Wednesday stood at 128 422 with 117 424 recoveries and 3 265 deaths.
The Department of Health urged the public to stick to non-pharmaceutical measures as the cases climbed.
Spokesperson Kwara Kekana said the department was concerned by the alarming increase in coronavirus infections.
“Non-pharmaceutical measures remain the best method of containing the spread of the virus,” she said.
“The department urges all people in the province to do their part to protect themselves and to help contain transmission of the virus, by adhering to the preventative measures. Physical distancing of greater than 1.5m, wearing of masks, and hand hygiene, avoiding public spaces and gatherings, and to seek care early if you develop symptoms.”
According to the department, 3 476 people were hospitalised both in public and private facilities.
The provincial command council said last week the aim was to ramp up its vaccination programme to achieve herd immunity.
Based on the latest stats, as of Wednesday, a total of 414 758 people have been vaccinated in the province.
South Africa technically entered the 3rd wave today as the national 7-day moving average incidence (5959 cases) now exceeds the new wave threshold as defined by the Ministerial Advisory Committee.
