UP suspends contact classes
"The University will also be reviewing the forthcoming examinations that have been scheduled to be written on campus."
The University of Pretoria (UP), has suspended contact classes until lectures end for the semester on June 25.
Prof Tawana Kupe, vice-chancellor and principal of UP said in a statement, given the university’s prioritisation of the health and safety of its students and staff, it was decided to suspend all contact classes for a period of 10 days.
“As you all are aware, the country is now in the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic and the numbers, especially in Gauteng, have increased alarmingly in the past two weeks.
“The suspension of lectures will include all lab and practical sessions. The university will also be reviewing the forthcoming examinations that have been scheduled to be written on campus,” he said.
Kupe added that while gatherings are permitted under the level 2 Covid-19 risk-adjusted strategy, staff and students are encouraged to avoid these as far as possible.
“Where participation in physical gatherings is unavoidable, please remember to adhere strictly to all health protocols including social distancing, wearing of masks, and sanitising and washing hands.
“The university has made isolation facilities available for residence students who have unfortunately contracted the virus. This has greatly assisted in limiting community transmissions. Students are thus urged to make use of these facilities rather than returning home to isolate,” he said.
“Likewise, students who have been in contact with someone who has tested positive for the virus are encouraged to self-quarantine in their rooms in residences and not to go home until they are certain that the danger that they may have contracted the virus has safely passed. This is to protect family and friends at home who may otherwise be exposed,” he said.
Kupe said that in consultation with line managers, UP employees are encouraged to work from home where possible.
“Please continue to wash your hands thoroughly, sanitise, avoid going to crowded spaces and places, observe cough etiquette, and wear masks in public spaces. Please do not come to the workplace if you feel unwell.
“We will continue to monitor the situation on an ongoing basis and will keep you informed on any further measures,” he concluded.
