Water leaks are being reported more frequently in the Pretoria North area.
This was what ward councillor Yolanda Duvenage said after another water pipe burst on Wednesday.
A fountain of water was seen on Wednesday afternoon spraying from the sidewalk of a main road in Pretoria North.
A north resident reported the burst pipe in President Steyn Street and claimed it had burst earlier in the morning.
“There must be thousands, if not millions of litres of water lost,” said the resident.
Duvenage said the matter was brought to her attention late afternoon.
“I immediately escalated the matter to the relevant metro department.”
Duvenage said there were more frequent reports of water pipe bursts and leaks during winter.
“Due to the cold climate, water pipes retract (and would expand during warmer weather), which would then cause the pipes to burst under pressure,” she explained.
“We still urge residents to immediately report water leaks to Tshwane metro. Getting a reference number is important, so that we may follow up with the metro.”
Water leaks and pipe bursts can be reported by sending an email to: waterleaks@tshwane.gov.za.
People can also report water leaks by calling Tshwane call centre on 012 358 9999, or its toll-free number on 080 111 1556.
