Youth Day celebrations at Gaza Square in Mamelodi
“We wanted to share the history of this country with the young ones.”
The famous Gaza Square in Mamelodi West, section B3, was the place to be on Youth Day.
This came after residents of ward 67 came together to celebrate Youth Day and empowering each other and giving upcoming entrepreneurs an opportunity to showcase their different talents.
Belinda Baloyi, one of the organisers, said the celebration of Youth Day was a reminder “to share the history of this country with the young ones”.
“We have invited the whole community of Section B3 to come and display their different talents and partake in different sports activities,” said Baloyi.
The residents also had the opportunity to take part in different sport activities such as soccer, netball, tennis and volleyball.
She said the main aim of the event was to celebrate Youth Day differently.
“We also had stalls for the market day and for the locals to get the opportunity to buy locally produced products ranging from cakes, homemade sauces, printed shirts and traditional food,” said Baloyi.
“The youth are the future leaders of this country and they need to take a stand right now, follow their dreams and most importantly they must unite,” Baloyi.
The event was a success and it started by explaining the importance of celebrating Youth Day.
Lucas Mabunda also urged residents to remember and honour fallen heroes by respecting the government regulations aimed at preventing the spread of coronavirus.
He further encouraged the residents to continue with wearing masks and social distancing at all times.
The members of Peu-entle Senior Citizens Club opened the event with a prayer followed by aerobics and exercising with the community.
Mabunda said this was not a once-off event.
“We are planning to host the event quarterly especially during the holidays.”
He concluded that the next event they are planning to host will be National Women’s Day, but it depends on Covid-19 rules and regulations
The event ended with a local DJ who entertained the locals with lovely music.
