Tshwane Covid-19 cases exceed second wave

Active Covid-19 cases in Tshwane have now exceeded the peak seen in the second wave.

Active Covid-19 cases in Tshwane have now exceeded the peak seen in the second wave.

This is according to Tshwane mayor Randal Williams who raised concerns about the significant week-on-week increases.

“Our most recent Covid-19 report indicates that active cases have now risen to 17 130,” he said.

“This is a significant increase in active cases, in the previous week the figure stood at 10 971.”

He said the increase was concerning. During the second wave, the City experienced its peak at approximately 16 000 active cases before witnessing a decline in cases.

“Looking at current trends, it is now becoming clear that active Covid-19 cases are increasing rapidly in the current third wave,” Williams said.

“New confirmed daily cases are increasing sharply, ranging between 2 100 and 2 300 cases per day.”

The week’s cases:

– Thursday, June 17: 2 154 new cases

– Friday, June 18: 2 210 new cases

– Saturday, June 19: 2 333 new cases

– Sunday, June 20: 2 295 new cases

– Monday, June 21: 2 337 new cases

Williams encouraged Tshwane residents to continue adhering to the alert level 3 Covid-19 regulations including wearing of masks, sanitising and practice social distancing.

He said the metro was continuing with the roll-out of the mass vaccination programme and were also accepting walk-ins at 20 vaccination sites for persons that are 60 years and older.

“We will continue to monitor and track the progress of the virus in the current third wave and advise our residents accordingly.”
