Adopt Gem, ‘our diamond in the rough’
"Gem is so sweet, he loves nothing more than playing with his big green teddy, and playing with his new human friends."
Gem, the eight-month-old pup, who had severe burns on his head and ears, is now the sparkling joy to his “new human friends”.
A few weeks ago he was rescued after having boiling water or oil thrown all over his head.
He was shortly taken under the care of Wetnose animal rescue centre after he was hit by a car in Mahube Valley, Mamelodi, in June.

Not only was his front leg dislocated, but he also had severe burns on his head and ears.
Centre inspector Veronica van Greunen received a complaint from a concerned resident and immediately rushed to the place where Gem was found to assist the crossbreed.
“Today we are proud to say that Gem has made a wonderful recovery, and has come out of his shell to reveal a stunning personality,” she said.
She said that Gem’s wounds did not happen accidentally, he appeared to have been brutally abused.
“Someone with malice and forethought intentionally dumped boiling liquid on his head, and threw him around by his leg.”
According to Van Greunen this often happened in areas with many stray animals.

“This is always so heartbreaking to see, but we will fix him up and heal his little heart as well. He will learn to trust again as dogs are just the most amazing and forgiving creatures.
“He has been scarred, but through all that, he has persevered and has taught us what it means to be brave. Gem is so sweet, he loves nothing more than playing with his big green teddy, and playing with his new human friends,” she said.
Van Greunen added that all too often, amazing dogs like Gem are overlooked since they might not be as pretty as their friend in their kennel.
“It is for this reason that we are pleading for a kind-hearted person to save Gem from a life of being overlooked, a person who can see the beauty inside. Please consider adopting this diamond in the rough, our little Gem.”
