City boosts teachers with mobile vaccine site

The Tshwane metro has deployed its disaster management bus to enhance teacher vaccinations.

The bus was stationed at Liana Hof Teachers centre in Sunnyside which was identified by the Gauteng Department of Education as acceptable and accessible for teachers in the city.

This comes after the Gauteng MEC for education pleaded with the education sector (staff and non-staff) officials to get their Covid-19 vaccination jabs.

MEC Panyaza Lesufi said while the vaccination were voluntary, the Department of Health highly recommended that all in the sector vaccinate so that everyone was protected from Covid-19.
Especially those with comorbidities as vaccination jabs were said to reduce the severity of illness and possible hospitalisation in the case of one contracting the virus.

The drive to vaccinate teachers began on Wednesday, with more than 125 934 workers in the education sector in Gauteng expected to get the jab between June 23 and July 8.

Tshwane mayor Randall Williams said he was pleased that the metro had successfully implemented an additional measure to enhance teacher vaccinations.

Williams said the metro had deployed its disaster management bus to serve as a mobile vaccination site for educators in the metro.

“Before the mobile vaccination site was activated, our teams thoroughly inspected the bus and quality-approved it.”

The bus had already been planned to be set aside to assist in the battle of Covid-19, during the unveiling of the Tshwane emergency service fleet, earlier this month.

“The bus is compliant with all necessary requirements, including having air conditioning, fridges, oxygen supply on-board as well as a wheelchair lift to ensure accessibility for the disabled.

“If the need arises, the mobile vaccination unit can be moved to another site.”

He said the mobile vaccination bus started its work on Wednesday during the launch of the educators vaccine programme.

He said 120 vaccines were administered on the first day alone.

He said the metro’s emergency services department was boosting the roll-out of vaccinations, as the disaster management bus assisted in accelerating teacher vaccinations.

“I am also pleased to note that our health officials continue to do a sterling job at all our vaccination sites.”

Williams said that the majority of the feedback the metro received had been positive and “for this we are grateful to our teams”.
