Tough time for family as mentally-ill brother still missing

Department of Health launched a probe into claims of negligence against the special needs centre where Shane Jordaan went missing from early June.

The family of a 30-year-old man who went missing from a special needs psychiatric centre earlier this month, said they had found no trace of him but vowed to keep looking for him.

Shane Jordaan was last seen on June 4, at special needs centre Kairos House in Rayton, Cullinan.

Since then the police, private security and the community members had several searches for Jordaan around the area, but with no luck.

Jordaan’s sister, Christan, told Rekord on Wednesday that her brother had not been found despite following leads supplied by community members.

“It has been 25 days since he went missing and all leads amounted to nothing. This is heartbreaking for us as a family because about five years ago we lost our sister in a car accident and now our brother cannot be found.”

Christan said the family was going through a tough time with Jordaan still missing.

Two weeks ago community of Cullinan and police organised a search party for a missing 30-year-old man.

“We we will not stop looking for him – we want him back.”

Mother of Jordaan, Louis, said the family searched for him at hospitals and mortuaries but there was no trace of her son.

“We are emotionally, financially drained because we cannot find Shane. We are sick of worry, and struggle sleeping at night because we cannot find my son.”

Cullinan police spokesperson Constable Connie Moganedi said the police continued the search for Jordaan.

“Officers are on the ground and continuing with the search, but he has not been found yet; he is still missing.”

Shortly after Jordaan went missing, claims of negligence at the centre were made by the DA. The party alleged that patients’ medication intake was not monitored and that they stayed in “filthy” rooms.

When the family was asked by Rekord on the claims of negligence, Louis said she would not speak on conditions at the centre while her son was still missing.

Department of Health spokesperson Kwara Kekana said the department was looking into the claims, but did not say when their investigation would be done.

Kairos House centre attorney Oelof de Meyer defended the centre, saying there was nothing wrong at the centre.

According to De Meyer, the centre was inspected monthly and received clearance certificates from the department.

“If there were any dirty rooms as it has been claimed, then the department would have known this.”

Jordaan was reported to have been last seen wearing a grey tracksuit.
