Five suspects arrested after tip-off
“After a short pursuit, the suspects pulled over their vehicle and surrendered.”
Mamelodi police, together with the Tshwane metro police K9 unit, arrested five suspects for possession of unlicenced firearms and ammunition this week.
The suspects were arrested in Mamelodi after the police received a tip-off from the public about the five suspects driving in a silver Toyota Corolla on Tuesday.
The suspects were between aged 28 and 39.
Tshwane metro police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said their K9 unit received information about five suspects said to be in possession of unlicenced firearms driving a silver Toyota along Solomon Mahlangu Drive in Mamelodi.
“The officers called for backup from the SAPS and other law enforcement agencies,” said Mahamba.
They waited for the suspects in the direction they were travelling in, along Solomon Mahlangu Drive.
The five suspects drove past the officers and a chase ensued.
“After a short pursuit, the suspects pulled over their vehicle and surrendered. Their vehicle was searched and the TMPD K9 members recovered three 9mm pistols and two revolvers.
All five suspects were arrested for possession of unlicenced firearms and possession of ammunition.
Police spokesperson Lethabo Mashiloane congratulated all the officers involved in the arrests.
He said the public must continue working with law enforcement in fighting crime within the various policing precincts.
“We will continue to work hard to root out all criminal activities in Tshwane,” said Mahamba.
The five suspects will soon appear before the Mamelodi magistrate’s court for charges of unlicenced firearm and ammunition.
Police pleaded with the public to report any suspicious-looking persons to them on 08600 10111.
