Police searching for two escaped suspects after foiled CIT robbery

One suspect sustained fatal injuries after being shot.

Gauteng police have launched a manhunt for two suspects, following an attempted cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery at the R55 Mall in Centurion on Thursday morning.

“At about 08:30, two security officers were busy collecting money at the mall when they were accosted by four men,” said police spokesperson Colonel Athlenda Mathe.

“The officers gave chase and a shootout ensued in which one suspect was fatally wounded.”

Mathe said another suspect was also wounded and taken to a nearby hospital under police guard.

“Police also recovered two money boxes stolen by the suspects as well as two firearms used in the robbery,” she said.

Two other suspects managed to escape.

No bystanders were hurt during the shooting, Mathe confirmed.

“A case of cash-in-transit robbery and attempted murder was opened,” she said.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Shawn Herbst said the CIT officer was shot in the leg.

“He was treated on scene and once stabilised transported to hospital for further care.”
