Medical waste found dumped near Centurion school

Residents were up in arms about medical waste that was found dumped near a school in Centurion.
This after syringes and medical junk were found by residents in the veld on the R101 Old Johannesburg Road, opposite the Hoërskool Zwartkop’s sports field, according to ward 69 councillor Cindy Billson.
“I have received various complaints from upset residents in the area and reported same to the relevant authorities such as the Tshwane environmental health department.
“It was alleged that the medical waste was dumped by a local general practitioner’s practice in the area.”
The incident was being investigated by the metro’s municipal health services in region 4 on June 25 at the site across the road from the Hoërskool Zwartkop’s sports field, according to metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo.
“It was observed during the site visit that most of the medical waste was indeed cleaned up. A follow-up health inspection was held on Thursday,” Mashigo said.
Billson warned residents that illegal dumping is a criminal offence.
She said the waste management by-law was clear, and warned illegal dumpers.
“A person who contravenes or fails to comply with any of these by-laws is guilty of an offence,” she said.
“Such a person could be fined or convicted by a court.”
