Trial vaccination at selected Sassa pay points in Tshwane

“Based on the outcome at the sites, the Gauteng Province will review and determine whether the programme will be extended to other pay points.”

The Tshwane metro will offer Covid-19 vaccinations at three Sassa pay points in the city over three days, as part of a trial run.

“Based on the outcome at the sites, the Gauteng province will review and determine whether the programme will be extended to other pay points,” said Metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo.

The three sites will be at Jubilee mall in Hammanskraal, Bloed mall in the Pretoria CBD and Mahube mall in Mamelodi.

They will be dedicated to over 60-year-olds.

Mashigo said the metro had anticipated to vaccinate a minimum of 200 eligible people a day per site.

Four vaccinators and about 10 support staff members will be at each site.

“This will depend on space availability and allocation by site managers,” he said.

Part of efforts to ramp up the vaccination programme will be led by the Gauteng provincial government and civil society partners.

The drive was launched in Tshwane, Ekurhuleni and Johannesburg, where mobile clinics and additional vaccination sites would be used.

“The drive is aimed at assisting all eligible persons for vaccination to get vaccinated near their places of residence or work.”

Mashigo said the drive in Tshwane would, however, not offer transportation to sites, like in other municipalities as the city was targeting mainly tackling Sassa pay points.

Gauteng provincial government spokesperson Thabo Masebe said all eligible persons were urged to make use of the opportunities created to get vaccinated.

“Government also urges persons 50 years and older to register for vaccination. All public vaccination sites in Gauteng accept walk-ins of all eligible groups.”

Masebe said the Covid-19 vaccines remained highly effective in preventing hospitalisation and death even in the event of a Delta variant infection.

“Each vaccination brings us a step closer to a better future and to the things we miss,” he said.

“Let us minimise the spread of the disease and flatten the curve through compliance with non-pharmaceutical interventions. We call on all Gauteng residents to get vaccinated when their turn comes.

“Please bring your ID or driver licence or police-signed affidavit.”
