Centurion can expect two major developments soon
“The expansion of Lenchen Road between John Vorster Drive and the N14 bridge is another ongoing project. This development is critical for our area. The plan is not at implementation level yet and still in design and planning phase.”
Among various projects underway, there are two major developments, including a major business park, being planned for the Centurion CBD which will constitute over R4-billion invested.
According to DA ward councillor, Peter Sutton, the open veld opposite Centurion mall where the old taxi rank was, was earmarked for one of these developments.
“I am in regular communication with the developer about the progress of this development. They obviously felt the effect of Covid-19 and are considering additional options for development to accommodate the current economic climate, but they are still excited about the development there.”
Sutton said the second major development was planned towards the corner of the N1 on-ramp and John Vorster Drive.
“This will be a major business park development and is in an advanced stage.
“In addition to these two developments, construction of the Old Age Home in Mopani Street, next to the Hoërskool Zwartkop, commenced.”
Further development entails a section of the K111 provincial road, which was approved and funded for construction. This is the first phase and will link John Vorster Drive to Olifantsfontein.
“The expansion of Lenchen Road between John Vorster Drive and the N14 bridge was another ongoing project I am involved with. This development is critical for our area. The plan is not at implementation level yet and still in design and planning phase.

“The project to extend Lenchen Drive from the Old Johannesburg Road to Rooihuiskraal Road commenced and is set to be completed towards the end of the year.”
In respect of maintenance, the metro was looking at new ways to inspect and maintain the 134kv electricity network affecting areas like Zwartkop, Sutton said.
“We are looking at new technology to assist the team with faster turnaround times for inspections and to identify potential problems proactively.
“And in co-operation with ward 66 councillor Ina Strijdom a project commenced to have a major feeder cable replaced in Clubview. That was because of major wear and tear caused by, amongst other factors, the impact of load-shedding.”
Sutton said the replacement of the feeder cable will result in fewer power outages in the Clubview area.
“We also have an ongoing project to replace copper and aluminum cables with a cable known as Aluminum Bundle Conductor Cable (ABC cable). This thick black cable is used instead of five separate cables.”
He said Tambotie Street in Hennops Park was recently furnished with a new ABC cable, which will continue to be rolled out in more streets.
“The ABC cable ensures a more stable supply of electricity and is of almost no value when stolen.”
Sutton said upgrading streetlights is another ongoing project.
“Functioning streetlights is a major challenge, and it is evident that the infrastructure is severely damaged. To the extent that the only long-term solution would be to replace cables.”
He said that was caused by a lack of maintenance over years, but it is also due to non-technical issues such as vandalism with criminal intent, and the installation of optic fibre, which damaged cables.
