Rand Water says water is back by Sunday

Repairs to the pump station should be finished over the weekend as parts of Pretoria and Centurion are without any water.

Rand Water estimated that full repairs to and restoration of its water pumping capacity, affecting parts of Centurion and the north of Pretoria, would be done by Sunday.

This after the Tshwane metro had to dispatch water tankers to several areas affected by an explosion at Rand Water’s Palmiet pump station over the weekend which rendered several pumps inoperable.

Some parts of Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni were also affected.

“Since the breakdown, we could recover 200 million litres per day at the pump station,” said Rand Water spokesperson Justice Mohale.

“This recovery comes to a third of total volumes required to full restoration. Therefore, pumping capacity has improved from 55% to 70%.”

He said the remaining two-thirds of the required volumes are still the subject of repair works currently underway.

Mohale said the recovery was expected to stabilise parts of the system and improve supply in some areas across Tshwane and other affected areas.

Tshwane metro spokesperson Selby Bokaba said water outages were experienced in regions 1 and 4 since Monday.

Areas affected are Rosslyn, Soshanguve blocks L, K, DD, M,UU and VV, Mabopane blocks X, T, UX, V,B, M, E, S, D and A, Winterveldt, Ga-Rankuwa, Rooihuiskraal, Kosmosdal, Louwlardia, Monavoni, Olievenhoutbosch, Rua Vista, Thatchfield and The Reeds.

Bokaba said Rand Water supplied water to the metro via two reservoirs, Brakfontein (which supplies region 4 and parts of region 3) and Hartebeeshoek (supplying region 1).

“Since the Hartebeeshoek reservoir is at the tail end of the chain, less or no water is flowing to it right now.”

He said on Monday that Tshwane’s system can only recover once the Rand Water station is back to full operation.

Bokaba apologised to residents, saying the situation was beyond the metro’s control.
