Ambulance crew robbed in N1 highway spike trap

"As the crew realised the gravity of the event, four men armed with handguns surrounded the vehicle pointing their firearms at the occupants."

Netcare 911 ambulance crew fell victim to an armed robbery when the vehicle they were travelling in was caught in a spike trap along the N1 north on Thursday evening.

“The crew was robbed of all of their personal belongings,” spokesperson Shaun Herbst said.

The crew were reportedly near the Carousel toll plaza, in Hammanskraal, when they heard a loud bang, followed by “extreme” steering difficulties which eventually disabled the vehicle completely.

“As the crew realised the gravity of the event, four men armed with handguns surrounded the vehicle pointing their firearms at the occupants,” he said.

“Fortunately, the crew was not injured during the robbery and no patient was being transported.”

Herbst added that this was reportedly the third spiking incident along the same road in the same area in the “last couple of months”.
