House Cohen asks for public donations for the elderly
"We currently have eleven elderly people and one of the thing that we need is nappies. Nappies are an expensive commodity, because once they are used, they can never be used again."
House Cohen in Mountain View is seeking public donations for the elderly they cater for.
The home opened in January and is currently home to eleven elderly people.
They need non-perishable foods, cleaning products, nappies and anything to make the lives of the elderly people in their care easier.
One of the founders of the home, Condrad van Wyk, said they also needed basic everyday goods.

“We would appreciate any donations,” said Van Wyk.
“When it comes to asking people, whatever they can donate, would be highly appreciated. We cannot really tell them what to donate because that would be rude and disrespectful. Anything will be highly appreciated.
“We currently have eleven elderly people and one of the things we need is nappies. Nappies are an expensive commodity because once they are used, they can never be used again.”
Van Wyk said society is more focused on the young, and forget about the elderly who paved the way and made their lives easier.
“I am just trying to make their lives easier.”
Another founder, Henk Kottier, said the house was meant for elderly people who cannot afford to stay in expensive old age homes.
“It is very expensive for them to stay there. Some of the elderly people cannot afford that. So we are a facility that just looks after the people who cannot afford healthcare at old age homes.”
Kottier said the Cohen House is mostly for elderly people who depend on Sassa grants.
“Some of the families cannot pay for some of the things we need, so we ask for donations from the public.
“At this stage, we need carpets because the house we are renting has tiles and it is cold in the winter. We also need gas heaters because electricity is very expensive.”
