East murder suspect remanded in police custody
Smomoza was allegedly killed by her boyfriend after a scuffle. Police found her body in his room.
The 30-year-old man accused of killing a young mother will remain in custody for the remainder of his trial.
This came after Morgan Monyai briefly appeared for a bail hearing in the Mamelodi magistrate’s court for the murder of 23-year-old Sibongile “Smomoza” Mataboge and for possession of drugs on June 16.
The court refused to give the suspect bail when he reappeared on Thursday.
The case has been remanded to September 3, for trial.
#Notinmyname has welcomed the decision taken by the Mamelodi magistrate’s court for not granting bail to the suspect.
Themba Masango of #Notinmyname said the organisation condemned “the senseless killing of 23-year-old Sbongile Smomoza Mataboge on June 16”.
Mataboge was allegedly killed by her partner after a scuffle. Police found her body in his room.
The alleged perpetrator was remanded in custody when he appeared in court.
“It is worrying that femicide cases in South Africa are five times higher than anywhere in the world. We need South African men to introspect and stop being at war with women in this country,” said secretary-general Thema Masango.
The suspect was arrested by the police after the woman’s lifeless body was found in his home lying on the floor on June 17.
Police spokesperson Captain Johannes Maheso confirmed that the police arrested a 30-year-old man at Mahube extension in Mamelodi East.
“The police were following up on information about drugs. When they arrived at the address, they found a suspect who was very nervous, frightened and looked suspicious,” said Maheso.
“The police searched his room and found drugs, money and the body of a deceased woman.”
Maheso said the woman was certified dead by paramedics who were part of the operation. She was later identified by her parents.
“It was discovered that the deceased was the suspect’s girlfriend.”
The circumstances around her death remained unclear.
