Pretoria protest action not related to ‘Free Zuma’ shutdown

Local community police forum reports that residents' protest was related to service delivery issues.

Protests that hit Pretoria this morning have been attributed to service delivery and not to the “Free President Jacob Zuma” actions which affected several parts of the country last week.

Protest action was reported this morning at Tsamaya Avenue, Simon Vermooten in Waltloo and Solomon Mahlangu Drive in Mamelodi. The R101 road in Hammanskraal has reportedly been closed this morning also due to protest action.

Mamelodi community police forum member Eddie Mnguni said the protest action at Tsamaya Avenue near Mamelodi mall was about service delivery. “Protesters are complaining that they have been without electricity for four days,” Mnguni said.

“The police are on scene right now containing that situation.”
Themba CPF chairperson Levy Matjila confirmed that there were protest actions on the R101 road in the north of Pretoria.

“It is not a political protest. Those people are protesting to get electricity in their area.”

Levy said the road was still closed and the police were on the scene.

Over the past week, several protest actions took place in KwaZulu-Natal leading to a number of trucks burnt. The protest expanded to Johannesburg on Sunday. President Cyril Ramaphosa called on communities in KwaZulu-Natal to desist from undermining the rule of law and inflicting damage on the economy.

Police spokesperson colonel Brenda Muridile said the police would send out a statement on the protests later today (Monday).

This is a developing story.
