TMPD deployed to monitor potential looting or violence

Areas of concern in the city currently include major highways in and around Mamelodi, Hammanskraal and several parts of the CBD.

Tshwane metro police have joined forces with law enforcement agencies in monitoring any development of violent protests or looting in Pretoria.

“Highly visible” metro police officers have been deployed particularly in volatile areas such as the Pretoria CBD and Mamelodi, said MMC for Community Safety Karen Meyer.

“Areas of concern in the city currently include major highways in and around Mamelodi, Hammanskraal and several parts of the CBD.

Major routes into the city from Mabopane, Soshanguve and Ga-Rankuwa are also affected,” she said.

Meyer said residents were urged to be extra cautious on major roads and shopping centres.

“A number of shopping malls and individual shops are currently closing in the most volatile areas for fear of looting.

“We strongly advise against residents and business owners from taking the law into their own hands by engaging in armed confrontation with these criminals,” she said.

Over the past week, several protest actions took place in KwaZulu-Natal leading to a number of trucks burnt. The protests expanded to Johannesburg on Sunday where shops were reportedly looted.
