The community of Mamelodi has joined hands with police and other law enforcement agencies to fight off looting and other criminal activities in the area.
This comes after Mamelodi mall and other shopping centres were looted and set alight on Monday evening.
On Tuesday morning, there was a police presence in the area along with the CPF to guard the mall.
There was high police visibility on Tuesday morning, said Mamelodi East CPF chairperson Eddie Mnguni.
“There malls have been looted to the core and now some of the mobs are targeting spaza shops,” he said.
“Earlier today, the mob tried to attack a spaza shop in Phase 5 but residents called the police who were quick to attend the scene.”
Mnguni said the team will help the metro police and the local police to maintain law and order within the community going into the evening.
He said that the community would do whatever it took to protect local businesses.
Spokesperson for the mayor’s office Sipho Stuurman said the metro condemned the criminal activities and looting that took place in Mamelodi last night.
“The looting was sporadic, with our law enforcement teams stretched as they tried to prevent criminality and restore law and order,” he said.
Earlier, Police Minister Bheki Cele called on communities not to take the law into their hands, but to work with the police.
As of Tuesday afternoon, there were no major incidents in Pretoria as many shopping centres remained closed.
