Staff in prayer outside Mayville Mall gives hope

“The beautiful gesture from staff at Checkers Hyper had us all in tears.”

A video showing staff members of Checkers Hyper Mayville Mall on their knees in prayer outside the centre went viral Thursday morning.

Videos were shared widely on social media wherein people were seen kneeling outside the store in prayer, calling for safety and peace for all.

“This absolutely beautiful gesture from staff at Checkers Hyper had us all in tears,” said community member and councillor Elma Nel.

“This really gives us hope in a time of chaos.”

Several stores and malls across Gauteng were hit by violent protests and looting this week. This came amidst the global pandemic and third wave of Covid-19 that had claimed many lives.

“This gesture of praying together shows that, even while times are tough, there is still hope for us – hope for humanity, if we can stand together as a community.”

Social media user AJ Roberts said this initiative of Checkers Hyper is a daily occurrence and the prayer meeting starts every day at 12:00.

Lynnecha Ludeke of Mayville Mall centre management said the initiative was orchestrated by Checkers Hyper management.

“Some of the staff of the other shops joined in, but really it was the initiative of Checkers Hyper,” she said.

Checkers group head office could not immediately be reached for comment.
