United captain to feature in Olympics team

“As a senior player, I’m here to do my job which is to play football and hopefully inspire the younger players and guide them.”

Designated SA number one goalkeeper Ronwen Williams will be in goals on Thursday as SA u.23 opens the 2021 Olympics against hosts Japan.

Williams will be one of the two overaged players to feature for the SA u.23 side which will face Japan, France and Mexico in Group A.

“It was a very long trip that took us around 30 hours to finally reach our destination and there are strict protocols we had to adhere to upon arrival. We flew via Ethiopia, we had a quick stop over and left for Tokyo,” Williams said this week.

He said that Tokyo has “very strict” Covid-19 protocols.

“As a senior player, I’m here to do my job which is to play football and hopefully inspire the younger players and guide them. I’ve been playing football at the highest level for over 10 years now, so I’ll be sharing my experiences with them.”

This is a massive personal achievement, one that I dreamt of, it’s a huge honour representing my country at such a prestigious event,” said the SuperSport United captain.

He said the games could hopefully help some of the players to secure their dream move.

“This is a perfect opportunity to showcase our talents and capabilities.”

In 2016, Keagan Dolly secured a move to Montpellier after his performance with the SA u.23 squad in Rio Olympics.
