Soup for the needy in Mams

Students served warm soup and bread to people in need living around the mall after they were affected by the looting.

A group of students from Brooklyn, together with a local church in Mamelodi, held a prayer session for the safety of Mams mall along with a soup kitchen for the needy.

The 35 students from Metamorpho in Brooklyn, who are part of Doxa Deo, and the members of Fire Revival Church in Mamelodi served needy people who did not have any food after last week’s looting.

The prayer session was held inside Mams mall and the soup kitchen was held at the mall’s entrance on Tuesday morning.

One of the students, Heinrich van der Merwe, said they served warm soup and bread to people in need living around the mall after they were affected by the looting.

The students found out that there was a major need for prayer and to give a helping hand in the area.

“We just felt that God put it in our hearts to help them,” said Heinrich.

The students in their prayer session inside the mall prayed both for the environment and against the looting and chaos that rocked the country last week.

Heinrich said they served warm soup and bread for more than a hundred people.

The soup kitchen was made possible, thanks to the members of Fire Revival Church in Mamelodi who donated soup and bread under the leadership of Pastor Abel Zuma and his wife.

The donation of bread is one of the church’s initiatives.

“Members of the Fire Revival church cooked the soup at their church and the students came and served the needy as part of their gap-year programme, where they serve and get to know themselves better,” said Heinrich.

“We decided to come here for the day because there was a need for prayer. Should there be a need to come back again, we will communicate with the local church.”
