Downs rope in new forward
“He brings not just that but he also brings the technical and tactical qualities that we may not have had in our strikers," Sundowns coach.
Mamelodi Sundowns have recently announced the signing of Slovakian forward Pavol Šafranko.
The 26-year-old Slovakian international last played for Romanian side Sespi OSK, where he scored 17 goals in 68 appearances.
Speaking of Pavol, Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena said the striker would bring a different dimension to their game.
“[Pavol] is somebody that helps us with different aspects of our game. His age is something that is important for us,” Mokwena said.
“He brings not just that, but he also brings the technical and tactical qualities we may not have had in our strikers. His ability to be a focal point, his ability to link up play in and around the box, particularly when we play against teams that reinforce the defence, you need players that are able not just to assist you to get there.”
Mokoena said that Pavol brought the right energy to the team and was mostly impressed by his attitude.
“He’s coachable and he’s not just here because he needs to be here. [But rather] he wants to be here because he wants to leave a legacy and that has shown with the investment that he puts in.
“When we signed him four months ago, he already accepted that he has a responsibility to try and get an understanding of how we play and for four months he has been watching Mamelodi Sundowns games.
“The reality is there was a lot of investment from his side to be able to show eagerness and willingness to be able to be part of the team,” he said.
Sundowns have boosted their squad by announcing five new signings this preseason.
The defending champions have been very vocal regarding investing in the youth.
“We have tried to improve and cut down the average age of our squad. That is because we’ve got a long-term goal that we’ve set. The process is also to try and recruit players that are younger and match a certain age category.”
