Arrests as foot patrols in CBD yield results
These patrols were aimed at preventing crimes like theft-out-of-motor-vehicles, theft of motor vehicles, smash-and-grabs, pickpocketing and ATM scams.
A weekend police sweep in the Pretoria CBD netted 27 people on several charges, four of them for allegedly breaking the lockdown curfew.
“Among those arrested were two people for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition near the Steve Biko hospital,” said Pretoria Central police spokesperson Captain Augustinah Selepe.
The arrests came as a result of several operations as well as regular patrols on foot in the area. These patrols were aimed at preventing crimes like theft-out-of-motor vehicles, theft of motor vehicles, smash-and-grabs, pickpocketing and ATM scams.
Selepe said theft-out-of-motor vehicles remained a problem in the CBD.
“We had a slight increase in such thefts,” she said.
“Motorists are encouraged to be vigilant at all times and exercise caution when parking vehicles in the CBD. Criminals are opportunists who will pounce on unsuspecting victims or break into unattended vehicles.”
She said there has been an increase in police visibility throughout the city.
