Slain female TMPD officers honoured

“They will be sorely missed.”

A memorial service was held on Thursday for two TMPD officers who died after an allegedly drunk driver smashed into an accident scene on the R80 Mabopane highway in the north of Pretoria over the weekend.

An off-duty metro officer was involved in the original accident on Saturday when two other officers responded to the crash scene.

A Mercedes-Benz then drove into them, causing a second accident, killing the off-duty officer and one of the officers who was assisting.

The other officer was injured and admitted to the hospital but has since been discharged.

The two officers were Sergeant Paulinah Lebogang Lebepe (38) and Sergeant Given Sono (33), according to TMPD spokesperson Isaac Mahamba.

Lebepe’s memorial service was held in Soshanguve, and Sono’s in Ga-Motle, North West.

Mahamba said Lebepe started her career with the TMPD as a constable in 2008.

“She was promoted to Sergeant in 2012. At the time of her passing, she was based at Road Policing Freeway.”

He said Sono started her career with TMPD as a constable in 2011 and was promoted to sergeant in 2018.

“At the time of her death, she was based at 331-Nodal Point.

“The deceased officers served the department, the city and the community at large with loyalty.”

Mahamba said the officers left behind their families, colleagues and friends.

“They will be sorely missed.”

Mahamba said the department wished to express their sincere condolences to the families, friends and colleagues.

“We pray that they are strengthened during this trying time. May their souls rest in peace.”

The two were attending to the injured officer at around 22:00 when a suspected drunk driver crashed his car into them.

Mahamba said the driver of the Mercedes-Benz was also injured and was arrested for suspected drunken driving.
