Warmth extended to animals at SPCA

“We appreciate them giving freely of their time and money despite these difficult times to help support unwanted animals.”

An SPCA volunteer this week thanked all the members of the public who helped their blanket drive initiative to see animals through this winter by donating blankets, food and doggy jackets.

“A big hug from all the innocent animals to all who participated,” said Pat van den Heever, a member of Highveld Pets Support Group and animal lover.

Van den Heever, who had been involved at Silverton SPCA for many years, drives the initiative voluntarily to still assist the SPCA.

“We collect blankets and even old towels for the animals to keep them warm during the winter season.

“We were so grateful for the generous people from the Highveld at Decadent Cup Cakes who offered their premises as a drop-off point for donations to the benefit of the animals,” she said.

“Then the lovely lady Kendal Simon of Clay Café delivered a load of beds, blankets and food, and offered her premises as well as another drop off point.”

Van den Heever said they were grateful for all the donations.

“The animals were warm during these cold nights, this winter having been the coldest since 2012.”

Those who helped in the drive are members of Highveld Pets Support Group and all dedicated to animals, said Van den Heever.

“We appreciate them giving freely of their time and money despite these difficult times to help support unwanted animals.

“I am so disheartened at the amount of people having to scale down during these times, who just cannot afford to keep their pets.”

Van den Heever said however some people emigrated without making any arrangements in respect of their animals or finding them alternative homes before they leave, “which is heart-breaking”.

“People abandon their pets and leave them at their homes to fend for themselves. We are thus grateful for people who support the cause of animals. You are loved and much appreciated.”

She said the drive continues and people can still donate whatever they have available.

“The SPCA still desperately needs a good quality oxide red door paint for their kennels, which are rusted. And also a good black and grey enamel paint for inside the kennels.

“Cleaning materials such as soap powder, dish wash, and Jeyes Fluid are also much-needed items. Also support their flea markets every Thursday to raise money for much-needed commodities.”
