Motor vehicle theft spikes again in north

“In some of these incidents, these criminals have forcefully opened gates to gain entry to yards to steal the vehicle."

Motor vehicle theft is once again on the rise in the Pretoria North policing precinct, police have warned.

“We have noted another increase in theft of motor vehicles in our precinct,” Pretoria North police spokesperson Sergeant Tsakani Miyen said.

Vehicles being targeted this time around were said to be both the Nissan NP200 and NP300 bakkies.

“We want to warn motorists, particularly those who own or drive these particular vehicles, to be cautious when they park their vehicles.

“In some of these incidents, these criminals have forcefully opened gates to gain entry to yards to steal the vehicle,” she said.

Previously, Miyen warned of an increase in the same crime category in May.

At the time, vehicles which were being targeted were said to be the Fiat Uno, Toyota Tazz and Nissan NP200.

Miyen also advised drivers of these “high-risk” vehicles to install gear-locks, immobiliser units and steering or pedal locks.

“This will definitely help because it is getting out of hand,” she said at the time.
