Local collects books to aid underprivileged community

“I did my grade 1 to 3 at this school some 30 years ago and they still don’t have a library.”

A Montana Park resident has called on locals to donate books to her collection drive.

These books will be donated to underprivileged learners between grade R and 7 at her former primary school in Limpopo, according to Mubvafhi Khavhadi.

“I did my grade 1 to 3 at this school some 30 years ago, and they still don’t have a library,” she said.

Khavhadi said she hoped that the books would both encourage and empower learners to develop a culture of reading.

“I feel the need to change the circumstances of the young children in this village,” she said.

“Knowledge is power.”

She said through creating an interest in reading, learners would realise they could be anything they wanted to be “through their imagination”.

Khavhadi said this was particularly close to her heart as she grew up with a grandmother who could neither read nor write.

“She did go to Abet school later on when I did my foundation phase. But because they were only taught the basics of how to write their names and ABC, she could not help me with my homework.”

She said that the situation in the village had not changed much over the past three decades and that the school remained “pretty much the same”.

The book drive was, however, a great opportunity to give back to her underprivileged community.

It was also an opportunity for the learners to also teach their guardians and elders who cannot read.

All books would be welcomed in the book collection drive.

“Whether the books are fiction, non-fiction, textbooks, encyclopaedias, etc, they will be highly appreciated as one book can make a change and make a difference in the life of more than one child,” Khavhadi said.

“I hope to get the whole school and community at large reading. Maybe a writer or author could come out of this village.”

Those interested in contributing to Khavhadi’s book collection can contact her on 072 610 4845.

Books collected through the drive will be donated to a primary school in Dzwerani, Venda, in the Limpopo province.
