Metro, partners deliver on low-cost housing commitment

“Today 24 houses have been officially handed over to families who will now have a place to call home."

A total of 24 houses were handed over to needy families as the Tshwane metro, in partnership with Nissan SA and Habitat for Humanity, fulfilled a commitment to improve the social conditions of deserving beneficiaries on Tuesday.

The houses, located in Ga-Rankuwa’s extension 10, were handed over by Tshwane mayor Randall Williams and Human Settlements MMC Mpho Mehlape-Zimu.

“Today 24 houses have been officially handed over to families who will now have a place to call home,” Williams said.

He further explained that his administration had worked hard to ensure the project, which reportedly faced some setbacks, was completed promptly.

“Contributing to the project, the city provided serviced land and has ensured each house is connected to services such as water and electricity,” Williams said.

Nissan SA’s involvement in the project reportedly formed part of its corporate social responsibility while Habitat for Humanity was intended to manage the project, but “eventually took the lead”.

“As the City of Tshwane, we truly value this partnership with Nissan SA and Habitat for Humanity. We view this as a humanitarian collaboration with various stakeholders coming together for one common goal of providing housing to underprivileged members of our society,” he said.

Williams also said they would continue to seek and embrace public-private partnerships which supported the city’s work.

“I would like to thank Habitat for Humanity and Nissan SA for their commitment to the project,” he said.

Williams further extended his gratitude to Mehlape-Zimu and her team for their work in ensuring that they delivered on their housing commitments.
